THE STAFFThe Iowa wrestling program is synonymous with championships. Team titles, individual titles, conference titles, national titles -- Hawkeye wrestling does not discriminate.
Since Gary Kurdelmeier won the program's first NCAA championship in 1974, the University of Iowa has won 23 NCAA team titles. Fifteen of those came under the watch of Dan Gable. Six other championships have come from the Gable coaching tree, including the last three under the leadership of Tom Brands. Brands won three NCAA titles while wrestling for Gable from 1990-92. He later won seven team championships as an assistant coach from 1993-2004, and since being named head coach in 2006, Iowa has won three national titles. Brands' staff includes his brother, Terry Brands, a two-time NCAA champion and Olympic medalist, and Mike Zadick, a three-time Hawkeye All-American and Olympic qualifier. Since 1974, Iowa has captured 23 team titles, crowned 66 NCAA champions, and earned 240 All-American honors. Simply put, the Hawkeyes win championships.
