Big 2nd Half Equals 1st B1G Road Win
Jan. 10, 2013
MADISON, Wis. -- Fueled by a 16-3 run midway through the second half, the University of Iowa women's basketball team dumped Wisconsin 65-56 on Thursday at the Kohl Center. The Hawkeyes (13-4 overall, 2-1 Big Ten) received double-doubles from senior center Morgan Johnson (23 points, 11 rebounds) and sophomore guard Samantha Logic (12 points, 10 rebounds). Once again Logic flirted with a triple double: she handed out nine assists.
"It was a good game for us to come out and bounce back and get some of that confidence back," UI head coach Lisa Bluder said. "This is our first road game in the Big Ten season, so it also feels good to get the first road win. We know how hard they are to get." Iowa has won eight of its last nine games, but last Sunday the Hawkeyes were knocked off at home by Michigan, 68-64.
Wisconsin (8-8, 0-3) led 24-22 at halftime and held its last edge at 27-24 with 18:39 remaining. The last time the score was tied was 43-43 with 12 minutes remaining. That's when the Hawkeyes began their 16-3 run. Johnson scored 17 points in 17 minutes in the second half after making 1-of-5 field goals during the first 20 minutes. "In the first half I was rushing it a little bit," Johnson said. "(In the second half) I slowed the game down a little bit in my head. My teammates at halftime were telling me they had confidence in me; nothing feels better than that." Of the 10 reserves used by both teams, only Iowa's Melissa Dixon scored points. She was 2-of-6 from the field (two 3-pointers) and 2-of-2 from the line for eight points. It was a return to her home state for Logic, who is from Racine. She said it is nice to come back, but her approach to it was the same as any other game. The strategy paid off as she helped direct Iowa to its 11th consecutive win against the Badgers. "Sam is not forcing anything," Bluder said. "She is making wise decisions." The Hawkeyes lead the Big Ten with 17.2 assists per game; Iowa had 17 more against Wisconsin, with a bulk coming from Logic. The Hawkeyes have seven days before playing at Michigan State on Jan. 17.
