Iowa Set To Face California in NCAA Tournament

IOWA HISTORY NCAA TOURNAMENT NOTES Iowa is a No. 9 seed in the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time. The Hawkeyes are 2-4 all-time in the NCAA Tournament as a No. 9 seed. Iowa advanced to the second round as a No. 9 seed in 1997 and 2002. The Hawkeyes have never played an NCAA Tournament game in the state of Indiana. Iowa is 8-5 in NCAA Tournament first round games. Iowa was defeated by Gonzaga, in Spokane, last season, 92-86. SCOUTING CALIFORNIA California is led by Layshia Clarendon, who was one of 15 players named All-Pac-12 at the end of the season. Clarendon has started all 33 games and leads the team with 12.6 points per contest. Reshanda Gray and Brittany Boyd were both named to the Pac-12 All-Freshmen team. Gray is the second leading scorer at 10.2 points per game, while Boyd is next at 10.1 points. Gennifer Brandon leads the Bears with 9.9 rebounds per game. CALIFORNIA VS. IOWA NOTES The teams share three common opponents; Illinois, UNLV and Ohio State. California defeated Illinois (80-56) and UNLV (70-48) and dropped a two-point decision to Ohio State (77-75). The Hawkeyes defeated Illinois in overtime (69-62) and fell to UNLV (69-59) and Ohio State (84-71). Iowa is 11-16 all-time against Pac-12 opponents. Iowa's last matchup against a Pac-12 opponent was in the 2010 NCAA Tournament. The Hawkeyes were a No. 8 seed and were defeated at top-seeded Stanford in the second round. SUCCESS UNDER BLUDER In addition, Iowa will finish with a winning record for the 11th time in 12 seasons under Bluder. Iowa's tie for second place in the Big Ten is also the ninth time, under Bluder, the Hawkeyes recorded an upper-division finish in the conference. NCAA STREAK RANKS HIGH IN BIG TEN Ohio State is the only other Big Ten program to have a longer active NCAA selection streak, having made the tournament in each of the last 10 seasons. WAHLIN CLOSING IN ON ANOTHER RECORD Wahlin has played in 126 career games, which tied the record held by Johanna Solverson. Wahlin has also started 108 games, which ranks fourth in Iowa history. Jennie Lillis holds the career mark for starts at 121. FINISHING REGULAR SEASON ON A HIGH NOTE Iowa tied for second place in the Big Ten, marking the highest finish since winning the Big Ten regular season title in 2008-09. This is the fifth-straight year that Iowa received a top-four seed in the Big Ten Tournament. NUMBERS OVER WINNING STREAK As a team, Iowa shot 42.7 percent from the field (211-of-494). Iowa averaged 16.9 assists per game and held a +5.5 rebounding margin. Morgan Johnson averaged 17.6 points and eight rebounds and shot 55.4 percent from the field (56-of-101). Kamille Wahlin averaged 16.3 points and shot 38.1 percent from 3-point range (24-of-63). Samantha Logic scored 13.1 points per game, grabbed 10.8 rebounds and is dished out 5.6 assists per contest. PUTTING WINNING STREAK IN PERSPECTIVE Iowa's eight-straight wins to close the regular season is the longest streak since 1989-90 when the Hawkeyes closed the regular season on a nine-game winning streak. The only other Iowa team to win eight or more games to close the regular season was in 1986-87 (11-straight wins). HOT IN FEBRUARY Iowa was 7-0 this season during February and went 5-2 last season. The Hawkeyes collected a 6-2 mark during the 2009-10 season, 8-1 in 2008-09 and 5-2 in 2007-08. Iowa closed the 2010-11 season with five-straight wins and won six of its final seven in 2009-10. The Hawkeyes won six straight to end the 2008-09 season and 11 of their last 13 in 2007-08. STEPPING UP AFTER PRINTY GOES DOWN Since Printy's injury, Wahlin is averaging 17.1 points and is shooting 37.9 percent (22-of-58) from 3-point range. She also has 33 assists to just 14 turnovers. Johnson is scoring 15.6 points per game and shooting 53.1 perecent (43-of-81) from the field. Logic is averaging a double-double with 14.4 points and 11.1 rebounds over the seven-game stretch. She is shooting 46.1 percent (35-of-76) from the field and is also dishing out 5.9 assists per game. WAHLIN SCORING BUCKETS TO CLOSE THE SEASON Dating back to Iowa's win vs. Wisconsin on Jan. 19, Wahlin is averaging 16.2 points, shooting 43 percent from the field (68-of-158) and 37 percent from 3-point distance (34-of-92). She has also converted 24-of-28 free throws (85.7 percent). Wahlin has also created shots for her teammates with 4.1 assists per contest. LOGIC COLLECTS TRIPLE-DOUBLE, BIG TEN PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS In addition, Logic collected her fourth-straight double-double in the win over Michigan. She has six double-doubles on the season. Cara Consuegra had Iowa's first triple-double in 2000 (17 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists). Kachine Alexander had two in 2009 (10 points, 11 rebounds, 12 assists; 26 points, 21 rebounds, 10 assists). Logic earned co-Big Ten Player of the Week and Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors after Iowa's wins over Northwestern and Michigan (Feb. 27). Logic was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week in the final three weeks of the season and co-Big Ten Player of the Week in two of the last three weeks. STAT SHEET STUFFER Logic has grabbed at least five rebounds in 23 games, including 18 games with at least three offensive rebounds. She has dished out at least four assists in 18 games. Logic has scored 10 or more points 13 times. UNSELFISH HAWKEYES The record of 468 assists was set in 2003 and 2010. Iowa currently has 496 assists. IOWA GUARDS LIKE TO SHARE Jaime Printy (fifth - 4.2), Samantha Logic (sixth - 4.2) and Kamille Wahlin (10th - 3.8) are all ranked. Iowa leads the Big Ten and ranks 15th in the NCAA in assists per game (16.5) and is second in the Big Ten and 17th in the NCAA in assist/turnover ratio (1.0). WAHLIN DELIVERS IN THE CLUTCH Year - Opponent - Time Remaining - Type of Shot - Result IOWA RANKS HIGH IN FREE THROW PERCENTAGE The school and Big Ten record for team single-season free throw percentage is 79.2 percent, set during the 2008-09 season. Iowa is on pace to break those records. The Hawkeyes haven't missed more than 10 free throws in any game this year and have attempted at least 10 in all but one contest, including 12 games with 20 or more attempts. JOHNSON NETS 1,000 Johnson entered the game needing 19 points to join the elite club and finished with 23. She is the third active Hawkeye to score 1,000 career points (Wahlin and Printy). MORE MILESTONES FOR WAHLIN Wahlin is just the fourth player in school history to collect 400 career assists. She is one of only three players to have 200 career 3-pointers, reaching the mark at Penn State this season (Jan. 22). PRINTY AND WAHLIN SCORING NOTES Printy became just the 10th player in Iowa history to hit the 1,400 point mark in Iowa's win over Purdue (Jan. 28). Wahlin hit the 1,400-point milestone in Iowa's win over Michigan State (Feb. 12). Printy cracked the top 10 on Iowa's career scoring list against Wisconsin (Jan. 19). She entered the game needing five points to pass Wendy Ausdemore for 10th place, and she netted 25. Wahlin passed Printy for 10th place on Iowa's scoring list during the game at Michigan (Feb. 16) and currently ranks eighth in career scoring. HAWKEYES IN FINAL CONFERENCE ONLY STATS Morgan Johnson was second in field goal percentage (.564) and blocks (2.1). Kamille Wahlin was second in 3-pointers made per game (2.6). Samantha Logic tied for second in assists (4.7). JOHNSON FROM THE FIELD Johnson has atttempted at least 10 shots in 15 of Iowa's 29 games this season. In 11 of those games, Johnson has shot 50 percent or better. Johnson was 5-of-10 (.500) vs. Harvard, 9-of-13 (.692) at Northern Iowa, 6-of-11 (.545) at Kansas State, 5-10 (.500) at Iowa State, 13-20 (.650) at Bradley, 11-16 (.688) at Ohio State, 5-of-10 (.500) vs. Illinois, 9-of-14 (.643) vs. Nebraska, 12-of-20 (.600) at Wisconsin, 9-of-13 (.692) vs. Minnesota and 7-of-14 (.500) vs. Michigan State. PRINTY SUFFERS TORN ACL Printy has started every game since her freshman season, totaling 88 starts/games played. DIXON SHINES IN FIRST CAREER START Dixon finished with career bests in points (19), field goals made (7), 3-pointers made and attempted (5-for-10), steals (3) and minutes played (28). Dixon is averaging 9.7 points and 29.7 minutes per game as a starter. REACHING DOUBLE FIGURES The Hawkeyes had all five starters score double figures against Mississippi Valley State and vs. Michigan State. Four players hit double figures against Northern Iowa, Kansas State, Western Illinois, vs. Northwestern, at Indiana, at Northwestern and vs. Michigan. Three players reached double digits against Harvard, Albany, Ohio State, Illinois, Nebraska, at Purdue, vs. Wisconsin, at Nebraska, at Wisconsin, vs. Minnesota, at Michigan and vs. Nebraska in the Big Ten Tournament. MOVING UP CAREER CHARTS Kamille Wahlin ranks second in career 3-pointers made (230), third in career assists (423) and eighth in career scoring (1,468). She needs 32 more 3-pointers to move past Lindsey Meder into second place, nine more assists to move past Michelle Edwards for second place and 131 more points to past Tangela Smith for seventh place. Morgan Johnson ranks second in career blocks (225), 13th in career rebounds (624) and 29th in career scoring (1,078). She needs 11 more blocks to move past Tangela Smith for first place, 30 more rebounds to move past Shanda Berry for 12th place and 23 more points to pass Shanda Berry for 28th place. Jaime Printy ranks fourth in career 3-pointers made (197), 11th in career scoring (1,409) and 12th in career assists (304). She needs 25 more 3-pointers to move past Wendy Ausdemore for third place, 31 more points to move past Megan Skouby for 10th place and 19 more assists to move past Lisa Anderson for 11th place. Kelly Krei ranks sixth in career 3-pointers made (159) and 17th in career rebounds (558). She needs 27 more 3-pointers to move past Kristi Smith into sixth place and seven more rebounds to pass Necole Tunsil for 16th place. LOGIC AND JOHNSON AMONG BEST IN THEIR CLASS Samantha Logic broke the Iowa record for assists by a freshman with 125. The previous record was 99 held by Jaime Printy. She is also second in steals with 44 and Johanna Solverson holds the record with 57. HAWKEYES CONTINUE TREND AGAINST RANKED OPPONENTS The Hawkeyes have recorded at least one win against a top-25 team in all but two seasons under Bluder. In eight of those seasons, Iowa has knocked off at least one top-15 opponent.
