In our countdown to the start of the 2013-14 hoops season, we will feature all 11 Hawkeyes. Today, we feature sophomore center Nicole Smith.
Smith is a sophomore from Rockton, Ill. The former Hononegah High School standout wears No. 45 for the Hawkeyes. The center played in seven games as a freshman in 2013.
Iowa opens the regular season Nov. 8, hosting UC Riverside inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena in the Hawkeye Challenge at 6 p.m.
What is it like working with the coaching staff?
"It's really nice to be able to work with them because they have been together for so long and their basketball IQ so high. It's nice being able to learn from them."
Key factor in recruitment:
"The team is such a family. We're around each other so much that being able to get along so well is really nice."
Facet of game you are working on:
"I have been improving my defense. I'm really excited to get out there this year."
"Win the Big Ten championship and get to the NCAA Tournament again."
Story behind your jersey number:
"My freshman year of high school, I was on varsity and freshman picked last, and 45 was the only one left in my size and I just stuck with it."
"Not really. I just like to listen to music and get into the zone for the game."
Why did you choose the University of Iowa and the Hawkeye basketball program?
"I really felt a connection with the coaches and the team every time I visited campus. I also love the atmosphere on campus."
