Hawkeyes Resume Action This Week

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- THE SETTING The Hawkeyes return to action after taking an eight-day break from competition over the holiday break. Iowa will face either Central Michigan or San Diego on Sunday. AUDIO COVERAGE ON YOUR COMPUTER IOWA HISTORY
SCOUTING TEXAS In their last game, the Longhorns defeated Cornell, 53-40 on Dec. 20. Imani McGee-Stafford led the team with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Brady Sanders had 10 points off the bench. Nneka Enemkpali (11) and Chassidy Fussell (10) had double digit rebounds. Fussell has played in seven games and leads the team with 18 points per game. Enemkpali has started and played all nine games and is averaging a double-double with 16.2 points and 12.1 rebounds. Texas holds a +16.2 rebounding margin and a +16 scoring margin. As a team, Texas is shooting 41.1 percent (235-of-572) from the field. SCOUTING SAN DIEGO San Diego's last game was Dec. 15, a 67-49 win over Long Beach State. Klara Wischer, Alysse Barlow and Maya Hood all scored 13 points in the win. Wischer added a game-high nine rebounds. San Diego forced 24 Long Beach State turnovers and recorded 11 steals. Amy Kame leads the team with 15 points per game. Hood is next at 9.9 points per contest. Wischer is the team's leading rebounder at 8.3 boards per contest. As a team, San Diego is scoring 68 points per game and shooting 43.8 percent (268-of-612) from the field. SCOUTING CENTRAL MICHIGAN In their last game, the Chippewas were defeated at Florida, 81-75 on Dec. 21. Five players scored double figures, including three off the bench. Jessica Schroll came in as a substitute and led the team with 15 points. Jas'Mine Bracey had 12 points and eight rebounds. Schroll, who transferred from Iowa State 10 games into the season last year as a junior, has played in two games and is averaging 15 points. Crystal Bradford is averaging 13.1 points and a team best 8.7 rebounds. As a team, Central Michigan is shooting 41.6 percent (264-of 635) from the field. SAN DIEGO SURF `N SLAM CLASSIC NOTES Iowa trails Texas in the all-time series, 2-1. The last meeting came on a neutral court in Miami at the 1987 Burger King/Orange Bowl Classic. Iowa defeated Texas, 75-65. Iowa has never faced San Diego. Iowa is 1-0 vs. Central Michigan, with the only meeting coming in the 2010 Hawkeye Classic (90-79 win). Central Michigan senior Brandie Baker and Iowa sophomore Kathy Thomas are both from Flint, Mich. and attended Flint Hamady High School. Central Michigan head coach Sue Guevera served as Michigan's head coach from 1996-03. HAWKEYES ROUT MISSOURI STATE Iowa buried six 3-pointers in the first half to sprint out to a big lead it never gave back. The Hawkeyes outrebounded Missouri State, 60-38 and recorded 24 assists. Five Hawkeyes netted double figures, led by Kathy Thomas' 15 points. Morgan Johnson and Jaime Printy collected 13 points, while Bethany Doolittle and Melissa Dixon added 12. MISSOURI STATE VS. IOWA SCORING NOTES - 103 vs. Wisconsin (2006-07) - 99 vs. Western Illinois (2000-01) - 98 vs. Western Illinois (2011-12) - 97 vs. Penn State (2008-09, 3OT) Iowa's 54 point margin of victory is the fourth largest in school history and the largest under Bluder. The previous high under Bluder was 53 against Western Illinois in 2011-12. Iowa's bench recorded the same number of points as the entire Missouri State team (43). DOOLITTLE AND THOMAS SHINE AGAINST LADY BEARS Doolittle registered the first double-double of her career with 12 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. She had a double-double at halftime with 10 points and 10 boards. Thomas sparked Iowa off the bench with a career-best 15 points. She was 6-of-9 from the field, including 3-of-6 from 3-point distance. HAWKEYES LIKE TO SHARE The Hawkeyes have 199 assists on 293 made field goals this season (1.5 assist/field goal ratio). Two players have recorded at least five assists in five games, including two games with three players with five or more assists. Samantha Logic tied a school record with 12 assists against Middle Tennessee (Nov. 14). BEST BOARD GAME IN B1G The Hawkeyes collected 21 offensive and 39 defensive rebounds against the Lady Bears. IOWA IN THE RANKINGS Seven Iowa opponents are ranked in the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today polls: Penn State (10th/10th), Purdue (11th/11th), North Carolina (16th/23rd), Texas (20th/21st), Florida State (21st/25), Nebraska (RV/19th) and Ohio State (RV/24th). In addition, Iowa State, West Virginia, Michigan State and Michigan are receiving votes. IOWA CONTINUES TREND AGAINST RANKED FOES The Hawkeyes have recorded at least one win against a top-25 team in all but two seasons under Bluder. In nine of those seasons, Iowa has knocked off at least one top-15 opponent. West Virginia was the highest ranked opponent the Hawkeyes have defeated since knocking off No. 10 Michigan State (66-64) on Jan. 27, 2011. This season marks just the fifth time in school history that Iowa has defeated two ranked nonconference opponents prior to Big Ten play, and the first time since 1995 (No. 12 West Virginia and No. 22 Iowa State). The other years include 1993, 1992 and 1990. BENCH PRODUCTION Iowa's bench has scored 14 or more points in nine of Iowa's 12 games, including four games with at least 20 points. IMPROVED DEFENSIVE NUMBERS Iowa ranks second in the Big Ten and 14th in the NCAA in blocks per game at 5.9. Iowa is the only team in the Big Ten to block 10 shots in more than one game, having done it three times. The Hawkeyes are second in the Big Ten and 34th in the NCAA in field goal percentage defense, limiting opponents to a 32.5 field goal percentage. Iowa is econd in 3-point field goal percentage defense at 25 percent. PRINTY CLOSE TO B1G FREE THROW RECORDS Printy is shooting 93.2 percent (55-of-59) for the season. The Big Ten single season record is 92.5 percent (99-of-107) by Indiana's Cyndi Valentin. PRINTY FREE THROW NOTES Printy converted 21-consecutive free throws between Iowa's game vs. North Carolina and the road contest at Florida State. She has put together a string of at least 20-consecutive made free throws in each year of her career. She converted 27-straight as a freshman and 32-straight as a sophomore and junior. Iowa's record for consecutive free throws made is 33 by Lindsey Meder. STELLAR FROM THE FIELD Johnson has played in 108 career games and attempted 10 or more shots in 45 of those contests. She has shot over 50 percent from the field in 32 of those games. Johnson had 10 or more shot attempts in eight games as a freshman, making over half of her shots in six of those games. She went over 50 percent in eight of the 13 games she shot at least 10 times as a sophomore and 11-of-15 in those games as a junior. Johnson has nine games with over 10 shots as a senior, converting at least 50 percent seven times. INJURY UPDATE Freshman Claire Till was diagnosed with a stress fracture in her right femur on Nov. 29. She will be sidelined 3-4 weeks. BLUDER CLOSING IN ON MILESTONE Only 41 coaches in NCAA women's basketball history (all divisions) have reached the 600 career win plateau. MOVING UP CAREER CHARTS Jaime Printy ranks fourth in career 3-pointers made (216), eighth in career scoring (1,555) and 10th in career assists (351). She needs six more 3-pointers to move past Wendy Ausdemore for third place, 44 more points to move past Tangela Smith for eighth place and three more assists to move past Jolette Law for ninth place.
