WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The 12th-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team dropped a 5-0 decision to No. 2 North Carolina on Sunday in its final game at the 2012 Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The Hawkeyes went 1-1 at the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, which was played at Ketner Stadium on the campus of Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C. Iowa defeated No. 13 Wake Forest, 3-2, in overtime on Saturday.

"We started off really sluggish, and never really gained control of the game," said head coach Tracey Griesbaum. "North Carolina played a very good game, especially in transition. We played very tentative, and some of our key players did not play well today. I felt like we were playing at a deficit from the start of the game."

North Carolina, the 2010 and 2011 NCAA runner-up, opened the game by scoring two goals in the first 10 minutes, as Loren Shealy scored at the 2:26 mark and Jaclyn Gaudioso Radvany scored at the 9:50 mark. The Tar Heels added two more goals in the first half to take a 4-0 advantage into halftime.

North Carolina's Abby Frey fired a goal in the 48th minute of the second period to make the final score 5-0. Iowa was outshot, 23-5, by the Tar Heels.

Senior Kathleen McGraw suffered the loss in goal for the Hawkeyes, falling to 1-1 on the season. McGraw rebounded from a tough first period, as she made eight saves in the second period to finish the contest with nine stops.

"We have to regroup and have a really, really good week of practice," said Griesbaum. "Our mentality has to be to get better every single day so we can prepare for this coming weekend."

The Hawkeyes will play their home opener next weekend at Grant Field. Iowa faces Missouri State at 1 p.m. (CT) on Sunday, Sept. 2.

"We were on the road for the scrimmage at Northwestern and the Big Ten/ACC Challenge," said Griesbaum. "It's great that we have a long week to prepare and we're very excited to open up our home season on Sunday."
