No. 6 Hawkeyes Escape Indiana In Overtime
Sept. 30, 2007
IOWA CITY - The sixth-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team escaped Indiana (5-5, 0-2) 2-1 in overtime. The Hawkeyes improved their record to 9-2 overall and 1-1 in the Big Ten. Juniors Caroline Blaum and Lauren Pfeiffer scored goals for Iowa.
"With Indiana's style of play, we were forced to make a lot of changes," Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum said. "It took our team awhile to make the correct adjustments."
In a defensive match-up the Hawkeyes recorded their first goal during the 15th minute, when Blaum rebounded Pfeiffer's missed shot and scored her second goal of the season.
The Hoosiers tied the score early in the second half when Katie Griswold backhanded her third goal of the season past Hawkeye goalkeeper Lissa Munley. The score remained tied at the end of regulation.
During the 79th minute, Jess Werley dribbled the ball into the circle with only the goalkeeper to beat. As the goalkeeper came out to defend her, Werley passed the ball to Pfeiffer for a wide open shot directly in front of the net. It was Pfeiffer's ninth goal of the season and third consecutive game in which she has netted at least one goal.
The Hawkeyes outshot the Hoosiers 21-7 and out-cornered them 12-8. Indiana's goalkeeper Haley Exner played exceptionally well, stopping nine Hawkeye shots, many of which came from the stick of Pfeiffer who attempted seven shots.
The No. 6 Hawkeyes will continue Big Ten action Friday, Oct. 5 at 3 p.m. (CT) against Northwestern in Evanston, IL.
