IOWA CITY - The Big Ten Conference named University of Iowa sophomore back Meghan Beamesderfer as Defensive Player of the Week for her play in Iowa's win over Sacred Heart (6-0) and Fairfield (3-1). It is Beamesderfer's first weekly Big Ten honor of her career.

The 2006 Big Ten Freshman of the Year has helped the Hawkeyes to four shutouts this season, while making many crucial defensive stops.

"Meghan has displayed consistency, once again, in the 2007 season." Head Coach Tracey Griesbaum said. "Her work rate sets her apart from most players. Along with her competitive nature, she has improved her distribution and elimination skills this year. Meghan has played five positions this year and continues to bring the same desire and intensity no matter where she plays. She is willing to do whatever it takes to help the team play to the best of their ability."

This is the second weekly honor that the Hawkeyes have received this season. Goalkeeper Lissa Munley earned the award, Sept. 3.

Iowa will open Big Ten play Friday against Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI, at 2 p.m. (CT).
