2 Hawkeyes Named to Big Ten All-Tournament Team
Nov. 6, 2011
The tournament took place over the weekend in University Park, Pa. Iowa, the No. 4 seed, defeated fifth-seeded Indiana in the first round last Thursday (3-2) before falling to top-seeded Michigan Friday in the semifinals (4-1).
"I am proud of them," said head coach Tracey Griesbaum. "This recognition is very deserving. Karli played awesome defense in the first round and in the semifinals. Her fitness and strength were very evident. Jessica had a key goal against Indiana and ran the field well in both games. They both brought great intensity and determination."
Barnett, a native of North Vancouver, Canada, has started every game of her Hawkeye career. Last year as a sophomore, she was named second team All-Big Ten, second team regional All-America and was named to the Big Ten All-Tournament team. She was named All-Big Ten for the second time in her career last week. Barnett has scored 11 goals, all of which came during Iowa's seven-game win streak that ended after the Indiana victory. During the streak, she tallied at least one goal in six of the games and multiple goals in four contests. She ranks second on the team with 24 points and tied for first with three defensive saves and has tallied two game-winning goals.
Johansen hails from the same high school as Barnett. The fellow North Vancouver native has started every game this season. The Hawkeye defender is tied for first on the team with Barnett with three defensive saves. She was an NFHCA National Academic Squad member a year ago.
No. 11 Iowa (15-4, 4-2), will await word on the NCAA Tournament. Selections will be announced Tuesday evening. Check hawkeyesports.com for full coverage.
