KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -- The University of Iowa women's golf team is in 17th place after the first round of the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Challenge. The Hawkeyes carded a 312 (+24) in their first round of the spring season. The top of the tournament's leaderboard includes James Madison (296), Miami (FL) (296) and Western Carolina (297), respectively.
Senior Laura Cilek shot a team-low 74 (+2) on Sunday and enters Monday tied for 15th out of 172 golfers. Fellow senior Lauren Forbes finished the day two strokes behind Cilek, posting a 76 (+4). She is currently tied for 34th place.
Junior Chelsea Harris, the Hawkeyes low scorer during the fall, is tied for 78th after recording a 79 (+7). Sophomores Kristi Cardwell and Gigi DiGrazia both carded 83's (+11) to round out the Iowa scorecard.
"A couple of mental mistakes cost us several shots," said Head Coach Kelly Crawford. "Laura and Lauren did a great job after a rough start. We need to make better decisions tomorrow and make a few more up and downs to move up in the field."
The Black and Gold return to the courses at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. (CST) to play another 18-holes. Live scoring will be available at Golfstat.com.
