IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa women's golf team sits in seventh following the opening day of the Diane Thomason Invitational at Finkbine Golf Course. The Hawkeyes posted a 304 (+16) in the first round to tie for fourth, before registering a 312 (+24) to finish the day (616, +40).

"I thought we came out and played well in the first round," said UI head coach Megan Menzel. "There were tough conditions today. That wind was tough, and the greens were firm and fast. We struggled a little bit coming down the stretch."

The Hawkeyes were led by sophomore Briana Midkiff, who finished the first round with a 78 (+6). Midkiff fired a 74 (+2) in the second round to put her 36-hole score at 152 (+8) and sit in a tie for 12th.

Junior Shelby Phillips carded a 75 (+3) in the first round, marking the fourth-best opening round score. Phillips sits tied for 23rd after recording a second round score of 79 (+7) to total 154 (+10) on the day.

Freshman Jessie Sindlinger started strong, firing three birdies on the front nine and finishing the opening round with a 74 (+2), marking the third-best opening round score. Sindlinger shot an 81 (+9) to finish with a 155 (+11) and sits tied for 25th.

Junior Nicole Rae carded a 77 (+5) and 79 (+7) in the first and second rounds, respectively, tying for 33rd. Senior Karly Grouwinkel sits tied for 60th after totaling 81 (+9) and 80 (+8) in today's rounds.

Three Hawkeyes competed as individuals. Junior Lauren English posted a 79 (+7) in both rounds to total a 158 (+14). Sophomore Amy Ihm totaled a 165 (+21), firing an 80 (+8) and 85 (+13). Freshman Allison Lindley opened the day with an 85 (+13) then shot a 93 (+21) to put her 36-hole score at 178 (+34).

"We need to manage the course a little better tomorrow," said Menzel. "We were out of position a little bit today, above the hole. That can make it pretty challenging, and the putts can count up quickly. Hopefully we'll have a better ball striking day tomorrow, and we'll come out and play tough."

The Diane Thomason Invitational concludes Sunday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. (18 holes). Live stats are available at golfstat.com.
