Hawkeyes Announce 2013-14 Schedule
Aug 27, 2013
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- University of Iowa head women's golf coach Megan Menzel announced the team's 2013-14 schedule Tuesday, featuring a home event in Iowa City at Finkbine Golf Course, Oct. 12-13.
The Hawkeyes travel to Lincoln, Neb., Sept. 9-10 to open their fall season at the Chip-N-Club Invitational. Iowa placed fifth in a field of 13 teams in last year's competition.
"Our fall season provides a lot of comfort and familiarity since we have seen three of the courses in the last couple of years," said Menzel. "The strength of our schedule continues to get better and provides great opportunities for us to compete against some very solid competition."
Iowa travels to the Branch Law Firm-Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque N.M. (Sept. 20-21) and the Challenge at Onion Creek in Austin, Texas (Sept. 20-Oct. 1), before returning home to host the Diane Thomason Invitational, Oct. 12-13.
"Hosting at home is always a treat," said Menzel. "We are very proud of Finkbine and it is in tremendous shape this year. We have a great field of teams, including two teams that played in the National Championship this past year."
Thomason coached the women's golf team from 1975-2002. She coached seven All-Big Ten selections and led the Hawkeyes to their first Big Ten title in 1991. Her coaching honors include 1990 and 1991 Big Ten Coach of the Year, 1990 National Golf Coaches Association Coach of the Year, and 1985 LPGA National Coach of the Year. She was inducted in to the National Golf Coaches Associations Hall of Fame in 1995, and continues to lead the USA World University Championships teams, a position she assumed in 1986.
"I look forward to getting to honor Diane and all she has done for our university," said Menzel. "Diane has been a great mentor to me and it is a great example for all of us coaches to remember to continue to give back to the game of golf. We look forward to having a lot of Hawkeye fans out watching and supporting us. It is special for our players to get to play in front of a home town audience, not something we get to do very often in golf."
The Hawkeyes will conclude the fall season at the Fighting Camel Classic in Bruins Creek, N.C., Nov. 21-22. The event is hosted by Campbell University. "It is always fun to play on the east coast," said Menzel. "I have heard a lot of great things about Campbell's course, so that should be a fun way for us to conclude our fall season.
Iowa's spring slate begins with the Westbrook Invitational on Feb. 23-24 in Peoria, Ariz. The following week the Hawkeyes will travel to Miami, Fla., to compete in the Hurricane Invitational (March 3-5).
The Hawkeyes continue action at the BYU Entrada Classic (March 17-18) in St. George, Utah, before traveling to the Dallas Athletic Club Invitational in Dallas, Texas (March 4-6). Iowa will compete at the Lady Buckeye Invitational March 19-20, in Columbus, Ohio, to conclude the regular season.
The Big Ten Championships will be held March 25-27, in French Lick, Ind.
