ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Iowa women's gymnastics team earned its second highest score of the season but could not overcome No. 3 Michigan. The Hawkeyes lost the dual meet 196.675-195.200.
"We didn't pay enough attention to details on the first two events, and that hurt us on the back half of the meet," said head coach Larissa Libby. "I thought the team did a phenomenal job on the beam and floor, even though their scores did not reflect it."
Senior Emma Stevenson matched her season-high 9.875 on the floor, placing second behind Michigan's junior Joanna Sampson (9.925). Freshman Alie Glover finished third in the all-around with a career-high 38.975. Sophomore Sydney Hoerr also earned a career-high, placing second on the bars (9.850) with Michigan sophomore Sachi Sugiyama and senior Katie Zurales.
Iowa started on the bars, earning 48.900. Hoerr led the Hawkeyes with a career-high 9.850, and Stevenson followed with 9.825. Sophomore Emma Willis earned a season-high 9.775, while Glover and seniors Kaitlynn Urano and Maya Wickus contributed 9.725.
Trailing the Wolverines 49.275-48.900, the Hawkeyes moved to the vault. The vault squad totaled 48.725. Iowa's anchor, Willis, led the way with 9.800. Wickus and Glover earned 9.775, sophomore Jessica Morreale posted 9.700, and freshman Kyra Trowbridge scored 9.675.
In the third rotation, Iowa posted a season-high 49.000 on the floor. Stevenson paced the Hawkeyes with 9.875, while Willis and Glover earned 9.800. Iowa also counted 9.775 from Trowbridge and 9.750 from Hoerr.
The Hawkeyes finished on the beam, tallying 48.575. Urano led Iowa, matching her career-high 9.800. Trowbridge earned 9.775, while Glover, Morreale and freshman Alyssa Lopez scored 9.675.
"While we are pleased with the performance, this team is capable of scoring 196," said Libby. "We've been on the road for three weeks in a row, so the comfort of coming home is exciting. I know this team can't wait to be in front of their home crowd and show their tremendous improvement."
The GymHawks will return home to take on Michigan State and Illinois-Chicago on Friday, Feb. 8. Action is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
