Austin, TX - The University of Iowa rowing team officially began its spring season today at the Longhorn Invitational. The Hawkeyes raced against Wisconsin, Texas, and Miami.

The Hawkeyes faced the lightweight Wisconsin boat in the third novice four race. Wisconsin (8:37.70) defeated Iowa (8:46:55) in this race. The novice rowers also competed in eights races. Their first eight boat (7:19:49) was defeated by Miami (7:12:95). Iowa's second novice eight boat (7:20.10) was defeated by Texas (7:20.04).

"This afternoon's racing was a good start to our spring season," said Novice Coach Laura Macfarlane. "We were pleased with how our athletes approached their first time down the race course, but we still have many improvements to make. We are excited about the work we have ahead of us."

The varsity rowers had two races today. Iowa's first varsity eight boat (6:27.45) defeated Miami (6:28.68). The second varsity eight boat (6:54.74) was defeated by Miami (6:51.70).

"I enjoyed watching the first afternoon of racing," said Head Coach Mandi Kowal. "The rowing seemed to be better than previous years and we were technically executing the stroke just as well as those who have been on the water longer than us. Today was a good start to the race weekend."

The Hawkeye rowers will race again tomorrow at the Longhorn Invitational. They will be facing competition from Texas and Duke. The first race will begin at 8:10 a.m.
