Hawkeyes Fall Short Against Illinois, 2-1

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The University of Iowa women's soccer team endured a one goal loss, falling 2-1 to Illinois on Friday night at the Illinois Soccer and Track Stadium in its second conference match of the year.
For the first time this season, the Hawkeyes were out shot by an opponent with Illinois launching 17 shots compared to Iowa's 11.
Illinois' leading scorer Jannelle Flaws notched her 10th goal of the season in the seventh minute, knocking the ball into the back of the net from approximately 40 yards out to give the Fighting Illini the 1-0 lead.
Iowa would answer in the 21st minute with a header from junior Katie Nasenbenny, who was assisted by freshman Amanda Lulek. Junior Cloe Lacasse fed the ball to an attacking Lulek, who flipped the ball to Nasenbenny for her first goal of the season.
The lone goal of the second half came off the foot of Illinois' Allie Osoba, who headed a shot past Iowa goalkeeper Hannah Clark in the 53rd minute, making the score 2-1.
The Hawkeyes drew a penalty kick in the 71st minute when Lacasse kept the ball alive off of a corner kick, drawing a foul inside the Illinois box. Sophomore Lana Bonekemper was chosen to take the shot, but her attempt was corralled by Illinois goalkeeper Claire Wheatley.
"That was tough," said UI head coach Ron Rainey. "Their goalkeeper made a great save. We have the talent and ability, and the key for us will be going forward will be focus and application."
Despite Iowa's two consecutive conference losses, Rainey said his team's morale remains intact.
"We've been in these types of games, and we know we can compete with these teams," he said. "We'll recover tonight, and be focused and ready for Northwestern."
Iowa's loss pushes its record to 8-2-0, which includes an 0-2-0 mark in Big Ten Conference play.
The Hawkeyes next match will take place Sunday in Evanston, Ill., against Northwestern beginning at 1 p.m. (CT).
