WACO, Texas -- The University of Iowa dropped its first game at the Getterman Classic 10-0 in five innings to Lipscomb (4-0). With the loss the Hawkeyes are 2-3 overall.

Lipscomb struck early in the top of the first inning, using two hits to plate two runs. After loading the bases with a single and a pair of walks, the Bison scored a run on a single and a ground out.

The Bison continued to capitalize offensively in the second inning, adding two runs on a sacrifice fly and an Iowa error. Iowa recovered defensively in the top of the third, holding the Bison scoreless.

In the bottom of the third, the Hawkeyes put three consecutive batters on base to juice the bases with one away. Michelle Zoeller drew a walk, Erin Erickson singled, and Kayla Massey walked, but the Bison used a strikeout to end the threat and get out of a jam.

After recording the first three-up, three down inning of the game in the top half, Iowa had another scoring opportunity in the bottom of the fourth. Whitney Repole reached with a double -- the first extra base hit of the game for the Hawkeyes and her second double of the season -- and moved up to third on a Claire Fritsch single. Once again, Lipscomb was able to end the inning with a fly out.

The Lipscomb offense added six runs in the top of the fifth on one hit and three Iowa miscues to extend its lead to 10-0. The Hawkeyes were put two runners on base in the bottom half of the inning, but could not score, ending the game in run rule fashion.

Fritsch went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead the Hawkeye offense, while Megan Blank, Zoeller, Erickson and Repole each posted a hit.

Shayla Starkenburg (1-1) was tagged with her first loss of the season. She struck out three, allowed four hits and gave up four earned runs in her 4.1 innings of work. Micaela Whitney came on in relief allowing one hit and three runs in her 0.2 innings.

Iowa plays its second game of the day against No. 14/18 Missouri at 3 p.m. (CT).
