WEST LAFAYETTE, IN - The University of Iowa softball team collected its 32nd win Saturday, knocking off Purdue, 3-0. Iowa excelled in all facets of the game to move to 4-3 in Big Ten play.
"I thought we put together a great game today," Head Coach Gayle Blevins said. "We did a nice job of getting runners on base, and had some timely hitting as well. We played a solid game, defensively, and Brittany (Weil) gave us seven solid innings."
Senior Brittany Weil turned in yet another dominating performance, tossing a complete game, one-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts. Weil had a perfect game through 5.1 innings before a dropped third strike gave Purdue its first baserunner. She still had a no-hitter after the fifth, but a Boilermaker single to start the top of the sixth ended the no-hit bid. In the fifth inning, Weil managed to strike out four batters after the dropped third strike.
Senior Colleen McGlaughlin gave Iowa a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. With a two-strike count, McGlaughlin blasted her fifth home run of the season, this time a solo shot to right-center field.
Iowa added two more runs in the top of the fifth inning for a 3-0 advantage. Freshman Liz Watkins drove in sophomore Chelsey Carmody with a single to right field, and was lifted at first for pinch runner Rachel West, who promptly stole second base. McGlaughlin then stepped up and added to her Big Ten-leading RBI total, plating West with a double down the left field line. McGlaughlin now has 38 RBI on the season.
Iowa and Purdue will play game two of the series Sunday at 2 p.m.
