ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Iowa women's swimming & diving team dropped its season-opener, 185-111, to Michigan on Friday night at the Canhan Natatorium in Ann Arbor.
The Hawkeyes posted the top times in three events against the Wolverines. Freshman Emma Sougstad sprinted to the title in the 50-freestyle, touching out in 23.84 seconds, junior Haley Gordon was the winner in the 100-butterfly in 56.43 seconds, and redshirt junior Joelle Christy claimed the 3-meter springboard with 312.08 points.
Gordon also finished third in the 200-butterfly with a time of 2:06.04.
Iowa also received runner-up finishes from Lindsay Seemann in the 200-free (1:52.12) and 200 back (2:03.05), senior Karolina Wartalowicz in the 100 (1:04.68) and 200 breast (2:18.52), sophomore Olivia Kabacinski in the 100-free (52.00), and Sougstad in the 200 IM (2:05.87).
Senior Abby Grilli also notched a third and fourth place finish in the diving events. She was third in the 1-meter with a score of 297.38 points and fourth in the 3-meter with 286.28 points.
Both Hawkeye relays tallied third-place finishes. The 200-medley relay consisting of sophomore Maddie Bro, Sougstad, senior Abbey Tuchscherer and Kabacinski touched in 1:45.92, while the 400-freestyle relay of Kabacinski, Seemann, senior Emily Hovren, and Stoustad posted a time of 3:32.51.
Iowa returns to action Saturday at 10 a.m. (CT) for the second annual Michigan Water Carnival. The event is designed to celebrate the aquatic sports of swimming, diving and water polo and increase awareness and exposure to the sports.
