MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Iowa women's tennis team finished up their final day of competition Sunday at the Gopher Invitational. Freshman Annette Dohanics defeated Melissa Cecil of Air Force (6-1, 6-1) in the Maroon Singles Flight championship match. The Pittsburgh, Pa., native was perfect in four singles matches and put together a 3-1 doubles mark this weekend.
"We got a lot out of this tournament. We saw many good things and know the adjustments and improvements we need to make," said coach Katie Dougherty. "(Christina) Harazin and Dohanics both had a very good tournament. Silver did some good things on the doubles court for us. We have a short week coming up here before we leave for a loaded Michigan tournament. We're looking forward to seeing improvements each week."
Junior Christina Harazin lost to Jessika Mozia of Minnesota in the Maroon Singles Flight (6-4, 4-6, 6-3). Harazin had advanced to the finals of the flight, but tournament officials adjusted the brackets to avoid a head to head match up between Harazin and Dohanics.
Freshman Caitlin Hindmarsh was defeated in the third place match of the Maroon Singles Flight by Hanna Dake of Air Force (6-4, 6-2).
Sophomore Morven McCulloch fell to Tiffany Tran of Air Force (6-2, 6-1) in the Gold Singles Flight consolation bracket.
The Hawkeyes split a pair of matches in the doubles bracket. Sophomore Ellen Silver teamed up with Dohanics to defeat Fritz and Shannon of UW-Milwaukee (8-2). Harazin and Hindmarsh were beat in the Gold Doubles Flight consolation championship match by Moore and King of Northern Iowa (9-8).
The Hawkeyes resume competition September 21st at the Wolverine Classic hosted by the University of Michigan.
