ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Iowa junior Ruth Seaborne looked strong in her Hawkeye debut, defeating Alexandra Cercone of Florida at the Wolverine Classic on Friday. Seaborne dropped the first set 6-3 before sweeping the final two sets, 6-2, 6-4, against Cercone, who entered the tournament ranked No. 49 in the ITA singles poll.
Seaborne, Iowa's top-seeded singles player, also scored a win at the top doubles position. She and Shelby Talcott, the No. 58 rated doubles pair in the country, rolled to an 8-4 decision over Craig and Najera of Utah.
Junior Christina Harazin and Annette Dohanics improved their doubles record to 2-1 with an 8-2 victory over Pastunink and King of Western Michigan. Overall, the Hawkeyes posted a 2-2 doubles record Friday. Sophomore Katie Zordani and freshman Caitlin Hindmarsh fell to Bekerova and Smith of Utah, 8-2, while sophomores Morven McCulloch and Ellen Silver were defeated by Western Michigan's Hawkins and Aleck, 8-5.
Aside from Seaborne's victory, the remainder of the Hawkeyes' singles line up was not as fortunate against Florida. The Gators, with a lineup that featured three nationally ranked players, won five of six singles matches.
The Wolverine Classic resumes Saturday at 10 a.m. (ET).
