Hawkeyes Sweep North Carolina State

MADISON, WI - The Iowa volleyball team completed competition at the InnTowner Invitational undefeated with a 3-0 win over North Carolina State Saturday evening at the Wisconsin Field House. Game one proved to be a fierce contest with neither team taking a solid advantage. The Hawkeyes finally managed to pull away with a 33-31 win. Iowa registered 20 kills and committed 10 errors in 44 attempts for a .227 hitting percentage. The Wolfpack tallied 18 kills while committing four errors in 40 attempts for a .350 hitting percentage. The second game was also a tough contest with neither team taking a solid advantage. The Hawkeyes once again managed to edge past North Carolina State at the end for the 30-28 win. Iowa registered 15 kills and committed seven errors for a .211 hitting percentage. The Wolfpack recorded 18 kills while committing six errors in 40 attempts for a .300 hitting percentage.
With a 2-0 lead, Iowa carried the momentum into game three and cruised to a 30-21 victory to claim the match. For the first time in the match, the Hawkeyes held the advantage in hitting percentage with 17 kills and seven errors in 38 attempts for a .263 clip. North Carolina State tallied 12 kills while committing eight errors in 38 attempts for a .105 hitting percentage.
Service errors proved to be a major factor in the match with Iowa committing only four compared to North Carolina State's 14. As a team the Hawkeyes registered 52 kills while committing 24 errors in 120 attempts for a .233 hitting percentage. Iowa collected a season-high eight service aces and registered 47 digs and four total team blocks. North Carolina State recorded 48 kills and committed 18 errors in 118 attempts for a .254 hitting percentage. The Wolfpack tallied two service aces, 31 digs and nine team blocks.
For the third consecutive match junior Carolyn Giese led the Hawkeye attack with 16 kills. Junior Laura Simpson narrowly missed her first double-double of the season with 14 kills and nine digs. She also tied a career-best with three service aces. Sophomore Echaka Agba continued her steady play with 12 kills and four digs. Senior Jitka Stehnova recorded 39 assists, eight digs and four kills. Junior Pam Kavadas posted a season-high three service aces and notched 10 digs. Freshman April Mech recorded a career-high six assits.
The Hawkeyes (5-4, 0-0) will have a week off before the start of the Big Ten season. Iowa will travel to West Lafayette, IN, to face Purdue on Friday, September 26. The Hawkeyes will then head to Bloomington, IN, on Saturday, Sept. 27 to face Indiana. Both matches are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. (CT).
