IOWA CITY, Iowa - University of Iowa volleyball recruit Alex Lovell has been named 2010-11 Gatorade Michigan Volleyball Player of the Year. The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the court. Lovell has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Iowa volleyball program in the fall of 2011.

The 5-11 outside hitter led Marian High School to its second consecutive state championship in 2010. She recorded 593 kills, 362 digs, 46 blocks and 44 services aces while posting a .486 kill percentage. Lovell has maintained a 4.11 GPA in the classroom. She has volunteered locally at an area nursing home, as a peer mentor and as a youth volleyball coach.

Lovell earned first team all-state honors and was named 2010 Under Armour First Team All-American. She was named a National Player of the Year Finalist by PrepVolleyball.com and a finalist for the Gatorade National Volleyball Player of the Year award. Lovell is the second Gatorade Michigan Volleyball Player of the Year to be chosen from Marian High School.

The Gatorade Player of the Year program annually recognizes one winner in the District of Columbia and each of the 50 states that sanction high school football, girls volleyball, boys and girls cross country, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, softball, and boys and girls track & field, and awards one National Player of the Year in each sport. The selection process is administered by ESPN RISE and the Gatorade high school sports leadership team, which work with top sport-specific experts and a media advisory board of accomplished, veteran prep sports journalists to determine the state winners in each sport.
