ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Iowa women’s tennis team won its 2017 season opener Sunday, as the Hawkeyes took down the University of Central Florida (UCF), 5-2, at the UCF Tennis Complex in Orlando.

“I’m very proud of these girls,” said UI head coach Sasha Schmid. “UCF is a good team and we were pushed in every match today. I liked the way we responded in singles after dropping a tough doubles point.”

In singles action, freshman Elise van Heuvelen defeated UCF’s Natalia Serrano, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2, in her debut match as a Hawkeye.

Senior Aimee Tarun, juniors Zoe Douglas, Anastasia Reimchen, and sophomore Kristen Thoms won their singles matches in straight sets.

Tarun was first off the court with a, 6-1, 6-0, victory over Nicole Jimenez with Thoms, Douglas, and Reimchen following the senior’s lead.

“These girls have worked hard in every way,” said Schmid. “This was a great start and I’m excited to keep working hard and competing.”
