Hawkeyes Fall in Extras at Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The University of Iowa softball team fell to Purdue, 3-2, in eight innings on Friday evening at Bittinger Stadium.

Sophomore Jalen Adams (9-7) got the start in the circle for the Hawkeyes. She threw her 14th complete game of the season in the loss. She allowed three runs on five hits and struck out four.

The Boilermakers struck first in the home half of the second with a two-run home run. The Hawkeyes threatened in the bottom of the third loading the bases with two outs, but they left them loaded as the top of the inning came to a close.

The Hawkeye bats were kept quiet until the top of the sixth when freshman Jena Young sent a home run over the right field wall to make it, 2-1. Adams retired the Purdue hitters in order in the bottom of the sixth.

Iowa had its first two runners reach to start the seventh as Tory Bennett was hit by a pitch and Adams had a single to left field. With two outs in the inning, Young drove in her second RBI of the day with a single up the middle to tie the game at two.

In extra innings, Bennett and Adams reached on back-to-back errors by the Boilermakers with two outs. They were both stranded as Purdue got the final out of the inning. Adams recorded two quick outs in the bottom of the eighth. The Boilermakers’ six-hole hitter sent a home run over the wall in left field to walk it off.

Iowa finished the game with two runs on five hits and had one error.
